"You can say the right thing about a product and nobody will listen. You've got to say it in a way that people will feel it in their gut. Because if they don't feel it, nothing will happen." Great entry U Steve!

Shai

Hi Steve,

Bruno sent me that post address. This post reminds me a quote: "if you buy a method, you will get a method". (Krishnamurti - I think).
I'd like pretty much to discuss this with you some day.

Cheers
Jacques (in Toulouse)

Building comfort with a new idea, a sense of anticipation, and an understanding of the need can be done with advanced marketing. I would suggest that the company should also be looking for Beta testing partners. A follow-on article might articulate the differences between Marketing, Advertising, Sales, and Public Relations; often confused.

Steve -

I've just finished an email to someone who is dealing with a C-level relationship issue that is eating up a lot of the time he wants to put towards building a great company. I imagine this sounds familiar to your readers.

Fact is, it is the relationships as well as the products that will help him achieve his goal. And relationships, as we all know, are not as tangible, black & white, straightforward as science and engineering can be.

Leaders need to learn to be comfortable in those confusing, chaotic, non-tangible arenas - arenas that many scientists and engineers went into their disciplines to avoid. Leaders avoid them at their (and their company's) peril.

Isn't business like life? To be happy focus on yourself and think about what is good for you...rather reproduce what the others are doing because it is everywhere in the media. For the Business, it is same: why to follow all the same receipes from all the same consultants. I fully agree with your statement.
Let's bring a French perspective here. Our tendency is: do not reuse and I will will do it better than everyone else... As usual, we need a mix of both: reuse good ideas but make sure they are the ONES you need...interesting cultural perspective! Bruno Dupas

Well put. Too many times we rely on the same behaviors, habits, procedures and even belief systems to reproduce success.

Especially in Marketing and Sales. What I see over and over are corporate leaders who are not keeping up with the technological developments in sales and marketing platforms that can assist in running a business.

Also, some entrepreneurs just cannot let go of power when it is time to move on and let the professional class assume responsibility.

Read "Do it Wrong Quickly" by Mike Moran, and "Amazing Pace" by Dr. Earl R. Smith, II. I've met them both and believe they have good insight into how companies and leadership must adapt.

David:

Thanks for your comment. The trick is to make that emotional experience work for you -- and not against you. Unfortunately, it's easy for it to go either way when you are creating change.

Steve
I love your article on dirsruptive technologies. It relates very much to what I've been focusing on from a branding standpoint - that to really cause change in an organization and to make a brand stand out, you have to have a product or service that disrupts the market - that is one that turns an industry on it's side. And it doesn't mean it has to be better, it just needs to create an emotional experience that builds cultural capital, and that is something that is priceless.
